Information About SAAS and Edible Fungi Institute

The Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Science (SAAS), situated in the west suburb of Shanghai, is a regional, comprehensive agricultural research institution under the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. Founded in 1960, it possesses a staff of 1,206 and 100 hectares of land. It has seven research institutes, two centers, one station and three key labs. They are: the Crop Breeding and Cultivation Research Institute, Horticulture and Vegetable Research Institute, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Research Institute, Edible Fungi Institute, Plant Protection Research Institute, Environmental Science Research Institute, Agricultural Science and Technology Information Research Institute, Biotechnology Research and Testing Center, Plant and Animal Introduction Center, Feed Inspection Station, Key Lab of Edible Fungi Genetic and Breeding of the Ministry of Agriculture, Key Lab of Agricultural Genetics and Breeding of Shanghai, and Key Lab of Greenhouse (Protected Culture) Technology. The SAAS publishes seven academic periodicals and conducts scientific and technological exchanges and cooperative researches with institutions in more than 30 countries and regions.

The Edible Fungi Institute is one of the earliest agricultural units in Shanghai. It has aimed at building strong ties with universities, research institutes and mushroom industries. It has been awarded many invention prizes and technological progress prizes by the central governmental organizations concerned and the Shanghai Municipal Government. Over hundreds scientific papers written by members of the Institute have been published in various national and international journals. The Institute has selected, bred and developed improved strains and varieties of generally cultivated mushrooms. Related cultivation techniques have been demonstrated to mushroom growers throughout China and applied in several foreign countries. Training technical personnel of all levels forms another major function and responsibility of the Institute. In collaboration with the Agricultural Scientific and Technologic Information Research Institute of the SAAS, the Institute has edited and published the well-known journals "EDIBLE FUNGI" and "ACTA EDIBLE FUNGI", which serve as forums for the exchange of scientific information and technological innovation of a higher level. International cooperation programs have been arranged or carried out with universities and research institutes of other countries. The Institute's young research fellows, who have received advanced training abroad, now play a major role in the overall management and the scientific and education programs. In a competition among China's 1,220 agricultural research units, the Institute won the third place for its fine work----for having achieved good results in scientific research, successfully carrying out present research subjects and having published a great number of research papers. This indicates that the Institute is in the forefront of the Chinese agricultural research units and has made its contribution to the economic and social development.
